Freestyle Soccer: Is Performing Soccer Tricks Worthwhile in a Football Match?

This question raised curiosity because people are still confused with it. Freestyler's ability to perform various combination of complex sequences of juggling and dribbling (ground) techniques makes them exciting to watch whether on the streets or through media such as internet. Nike launched freestyle campaign in the early 21st century through advertising and promoting competitions throughout the world enabling people to see the likes of Ronaldinho, Edgar Davids, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Francessco Totti, Ronaldo and others. But can freestyle football become practical to the "real" football game?

Freestyle Football Benefits

Juggling and dribbling techniques is the process to improve coordination, balancing and ball control. Mastering a complex set of juggling trick requires time, dedication and patience to become an exciting freestyler. Freestyle football allows individual to express their creativity on inventing new soccer tricks either on juggling or dribbling skills.

There are many dribbling tricks like the step-over that can be learned and practise. Each trick has different levels of difficulty varying from beginners to advance. Choosing and performing the right trick during a football match can be a crucial strategy. Applying these tricks require good timing and execution. Execute it perfectly and you'll gain valuable seconds or create space for your teammates in tight situations. But make a mistake and you'll allow your opposition to crawl back to their positions or you'll lose the ball thus allowing them to hit on a counter attack.

Top professional football players such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo may have many tricks in the bag. But they only master or specialize one trick in a match known as their "trademark" trick like the famous 360-roulette, flip- flap and dummy are there to be seen.

The Downside of Freestyle Football

Freestyle footballer has tremendous technical ability especially ball control but may lack in other attributes that are required during a football match.

Attributes are spread into three categories:

1. Physical

Many leagues especially in Europe require football players to meet the in-game physical demand such as stamina, strength, balance, agility, pace, speed, acceleration and jumping

2. Mental

Aggression, anticipation, bravery, creativity, decision making, determination, flair, influence, off the ball, positioning, team work and work rate

3. Technical

Ball control (technique), crossing, dribbling, finishing (shooting), heading, long shots, long throws, marking, passing, taking penalties, set pieces (free kicks, corner kicks, throw-ins) and tackling

Of course when you're involved in a football training or match, some coaches may discourage you from doing tricks on the pitch. Instead they focus on other factors like team spirit, team movement and tactical battle which in my opinion necessary to win a match.

Is All About Playing "Beautiful" Football

But who wouldn't want to see top football players displaying their brilliance on the pitch. The "beautiful game" is more about football teams winning with style rather than scrapping for victories. After all, the modern game is more about entertaining the football fans than just winning at all cost. Sadly, some teams still adopt this unhealthy mindset. Never-the-less, being able to pull-off a trick and out-manouvering your opponent is the best feeling in the world. Finally, let's raised the "beautiful game" to another level.

Teaching Soccer – What Coaches Need to Know

There are several factors that a coach must take into careful consideration while teaching soccer tactics, especially while training young players.

  • Simple Soccer Tactics
  • The expert coach always starts with teaching the players about the simple soccer tactics. You should teach the tactics that the players can use with the skills they possess. Once you start seeing the improvement in their game, it is only then you should offer them more advanced tactics.

  • Appropriate To The Players' Age
  • This is again one of the most important things that the coaches must keep in mind. This is something that many soccer coaches overlook and they start teaching the same tactics to everybody irrespective of their ages.

This is something that can bring adverse effect to your team’s performance. Therefore, make sure that you teach them the basic soccer tactics that are appropriate to the players' age and match.

  • Simple Language
  • The language and the way in which you give instructions to the players must be simple, direct, and unambiguous.

  • Brief Instructions
  • True that you need to make your descriptions easy to understand, but it does not mean that you should tell them everything in such detail that it should eat up most of your training time.

It is equally important for you to keep in mind the time factor and be as brief as possible. However, you should not compromise on clarity just because you need to brief in your instructions.

It is not at all a good idea to use long lectures in the training session. Furthermore, many coaches use sarcasm in their instructions. Always remember that is not good for the health of the game and for your team’s performance.

Therefore, make sure that you are not using any sarcasm that could be misinterpreted. It is better to avoid jargon as well. You should try your best to speak carefully and be specific and brief.

Always remember that seeing is better than hearing and Doing is better than seeing. Therefore, when it comes to teaching soccer, an expert coach should introduce his topic, show it, and get the kids doing it quickly.

    Basketball For Beginners - Positions

Though not specified anywhere within the rule books that there are certain positions which must be filled on the court, basketball has evolved into a very structured game where such positions have become an integral part of the game. Throughout the years, the positions have become more specific. During the first fifty years of the sport, teams generally populated the court with two guards, two forwards, and one center.

In the 1980’s the positions became more clearly defined, being renamed as five separate positions. The five men on court were now the point guard, the shooting guard, the small forward, the power forward, and the center. In certain plays, the center may be replaced with a third guard for a “three guard offense”.

There are two major defense strategies employed by professional basketball teams, one being a zone defense and the other a man-to-man defense. The zone defense strategy calls for players to maintain certain positions on the court and guard whichever player from the other team enters their “zone”. In a man-to-man defense, each player is assigned a specific opposing team member to guard and follows his actions all over the court in an attempt to keep his actions under control.

    Cool Tips For Basketball Players

    1. Shoot, Shoot, and Then Shoot Some More

”The weakest part of Michael’s (Jordan’s) game on the offensive end was his shooting and so he obviously mastered something everyone said he couldn’t do…and he did by shooting and shooting and shooting and shooting consistently. This guy said what are my weaknesses and how do I make them my strengths and he did it.” -Phil Jackson, on Michael Jordan’s shooting success.

If I could only give you only one piece of advice this would be it:

    Become a good shooter!

In my opinion, becoming a good shooter is the most important thing you could ever do in order to become a successful basketball player.

Every NBA super star, every great college player, every playground legend…can pretty much attribute their success to one thing…their ability to shoot.

Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Allen Iverson, Larry Bird, Lebron James, Carmello Anthony, Reggie Miller, J.J. Redick, Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Dirk Nowitzki and virtually all the other great players, are all exceptional shooters. Sure they have great athletic ability, but so do a lot of other guys. However their ability to put the ball in the basket is what separates them from others.

Being able to shoot a basketball is almost a license to be super successful and have lots of fun playing the game of basketball.

If you want to become a better basketball player, practice your shooting. Learn how to shoot the ball correctly. Learn how to catch and release the ball with proper motion. Learn how to follow through. Learn by watching the pro’s and learning from coaches. I guarantee it will be the most important basketball skill you ever learn!

    2. Be In Great Physical Condition

When, I work with athlete’s through my Maximum Results Fitness programs, I am always shocked at how out of shape most athletes are. I see so many athlete’s that lack the basic strength and conditioning they need in order to perform at a high level.

Basketball is all about conditioning. The better physical condition you are in, the easier it is to perform and learn the basic fundamental skills that will make you a successful player.

Many players come to me asking me for tips on how they can become a better shooter or a better ball handler, but are shocked when I tell them, that their biggest problem really lays in their lack of conditioning.

I am a firm believer that you’re only going to be as good as your body will take you. I often see players with tremendous talent struggle, simply because they can’t run up and down the floor without losing their breath. It doesn’t matter how talented you are, if you’re not in the right shape, you’re going to struggle.

With many of my programs, I teach what I call the Forth Quarter Principle. That is you want to be as good at something in the forth quarter as you do from the very first play of the game. The only difference between the first play of the game and the last is the physical excursion that takes place in between.

If you want to become a great player and if you want to maximize your skill potential focuses on your conditioning. Good conditioning is a fundamental of basketball success.

    3. A Little Practice Goes Along Long Way

One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming a better player is that you have to spend mega hours practicing and training. I am here to tell you that this simply isn’t true.

Obviously, if you want to become better at something it helps if you practice a lot. But, many times people misplace quantity for quality. I know a lot of players are under the misconception that to get better they are going to have to practice long hours before they start to see the results they are looking for.

The truth is results will s come quickly if you prepare in the right way. It’s much more important to have a consistent, high quality practice schedule or workout routine than it is to try and learn everything in one day.

Practicing only 20 minutes everyday will help you more than spending two hours once a week. With consistency, familiarity will start to develop. What you worked on yesterday will come easier tomorrow and even easier the day after that. When there is a large space between practice times or workout sessions, it is much more difficult to pick up where you left off. You often have to re-learn what you already know. This wastes valuable time, when you could be making progress.

Remember a little bit of practice today, makes success not too far away!

    4. Know Your Footwork

One of the things that is really under taught and under empathized is proper footwork.

I define proper footwork as three things:
    1. Being able to pivot.
    2. Being able to stay on balance.
    3. Being able to push off quickly (for running and jumping).

Pivoting is probably one of the most fundamental parts of the game. Being able to keep one foot planted while maneuvering with the other foot is extremely important. Being able to pivot properly will help you play all parts of the game better. The more you practice this the more it will become habit and it will help you develop a smoother flow to your game.

When pivoting it is also important to stay on balance and keep your body weight properly distributed at all times. When you combine balance with good pivoting ability you will become stronger and faster.

Good pivoting and good balance will ultimately allow you more explosive jumping ability and greater quickness. When you start to combine your pivot with good balance your footwork for skills like shooting and dribbling will become easier and help your game develop more quickly.

    5. Dribble, Dribble, Dribble

The Cross-Over, Behind-The-back, Between-The Legs, all of these moves have one thing in common. They all come from mastering the dribble! If you want to become a good basketball player, then you must become a good ball handler.

Dribbling is one of the core basketball skills. It is also one of the funnest skills to practice and learn. Dribbling is also very simple to become good at it. All you have to do is start dribbling! Then Bingo in a short time you will become a much better player.

The thing I also love about dribbling is that you get to spend more time with the ball. Any activity you can do where you spend time with the ball doing multiple repetitions is going to make you a better player.

The other great thing about dribbling is that you can practice it almost anywhere. All you need to do is break out your ball and start dribbling. It only takes a few minutes a day to practice and soon you will see quick improvements in your game.

    6. Finish Strong

One of the big mistakes I see a lot of players make is they learn to make spectacular moves, but then fail to finish the play and make the basket!

Developing moves and learning skills to get past your opponent is very important, but it doesn’t do you any good if you can’t make the basket at the end!

One of the main things that college and pro scouts look for is a player’s ability to finish the play. They know that it doesn’t do any good to make a great move and then miss the basket.

To train players to become good finishers I tell them to think about any move in two parts. First is the “move” part where they separate themselves from the defender and then, second is the “finish” where they concentrate on making the basket. When practicing, it’s often a good idea to practice them separately first and then bring them together. For example, if you were working on a behind-the-back dribble move you would practice the behind-the-back part first. Repeating it over and over again, without shooting. Then once you got it down you would start adding the “finishing” part, where you start adding the shooting part. Then you can see what part you need more development on, the “move” or the “finish”.

Remember, that if you don’t make the basket, it wasn’t a successful move!

    7. Fake Your Way To Success

Want to make your moves twice as effective?

Then add simple fakes to your game! Faking is a very powerful way to get opponents off balance before you even start your move. Lot’s of times a quick and simple fake is all you need to get wide open for the shoot!

The great thing about faking though, is you can use them in almost every part of the game. In shooting, you can use pump fakes. When dribbling, you can use foot fakes. When passing you can give “no look passes”.

I really recommend that you start trying to add as many fakes as you can to different parts of your game. Once you do you will soon realize how effective they can be. After you keep practicing them and using them when your playing they will become so natural you won’t even know that you are using them!

    8. Move Without The Ball

Let’s face it, having the ball in your hands is fun. It’s fun to catch and pass and shoot and dribble. We all like to touch the ball as much as possible, because it makes us feel that we are more involved with the game.

However, if you really want to become a better player it is very important that you learn to play without the ball. To become a complete player, this is a must.

In most games you will only have the ball in your hands about 10% of the time. That means the other 90% of the time you won’t have the ball! That 90% of the time can be spent doing other important things.

Learning to play without the ball can also give you the mental edge that you need when you have the ball. Many times players get frustrated, when they haven’t touched the ball in awhile. It’s important for you as a player to realize that it isn’t how much you touch the ball what, but what you do with it when you have it. Or in most cases what you do when you DON’T have the ball. Doing this will add confidence to your game and make your complete game more effective.

    9. Get The Right Mentality

Having the right attitude is essential if you want to become a better basketball player. Many times players will fail to reach their goals, not because they lack the right skills, but because they lack the right attitude.

Many times things are not going to go how you would like them to go out on the basketball court. The best thing to do is not get frustrated. Instead, focus on what things you can do to have a positive result on the next play or series of plays.

One of the best examples of this is when players get fouled and it doesn’t get called. They often get so focused on the fact that a foul wasn’t called that they then lose their focus and start making mistakes. Then those mistakes start to lead to frustration.

Don’t focus on negative things, instead immediately start to focus on a what you can do to make positive things happen. Don’t worry about the foul that wasn’t called or the mistake you made. Try to think about how you can get a rebound or a steal, or what you are going to do next time to make sure you get the call.

Just a slight change in your mentality can make a big difference.

    10. Learn As Much As You Can

The game of basketball is a wonderful sport and becoming good at it is a lot of fun. No matter what level of play you are at, you can always become better. That’s why I encourage you to learn as much as you can about the game. Whether it’s watching games on TV or playing by yourself out on the playground, there is always a new move or a new technique to be discovered that will give you that extra edge.

The more you learn, the better you will get. Always have a thirst to learn more and become better. Learning is the Ultimate Success Secret.

I hope that this report has given you some valuable information that you can use to become a better player. I am sure that if you apply these tips, all your basketball dreams will come true!

Good Luck and remember…Play with Confidence!

Slam Dunk – How to Jump Higher to Dunk a Basketball

Slam dunk or simply dunk is a basketball shot. This generally requires the capability of the player to jump high in the air and give power to the ball with one or both of his hands. Top 5 Things To Look For In A Vertical Jump Program

If you're looking to improve your basketball skills and want to jump higher or even dunk, vertical jump programs can help you out. Which jump programs actually deliver the goods though? There are so many different ones out there, and most of them make claims that they can't back up. If gaining 15 inches to your vertical without was really as easy as some programs make you think, wouldn't everybody be dunking by now? So how can you find a really good vertical program?

Here are the 5 things you should look for in a vertical jump program.

    1. Uncomplicated instructions

It's important that you can understand what the creator of the program is talking about. It shouldn't matter if you're a beginner or a professional, the program should be easy for anybody to start doing without a glossary of complicated terms and words.

    2. Plyometrics and weighlifting workout routines

Only programs that have plyo and weight workouts are helpful. If the product you're looking at doesn't have these things, there's no way it can help you jump higher. Plyometrics is all about explosive movements, which is something you'll need when you try and dunk.

    3. Customizable workouts

All athletes are at different stages, and what might work for you probably wouldn't work for someone else. This is why it's very important that a program has enough workouts for beginners, intermediate and advanced ballers. That way, if you're really good at plyometrics workouts, but you've never lifted weights in your life, you can create a special workout made up of the exact programs that you need.

    4. Improves overall strength and speed

If you can jump higher, you should automatically be stronger and faster, so if you're only able to jump an inch or two higher, the workout system you have is probably not helping you get stronger or faster.

    5. Be Affordable

You shouldn't have to spend an arm and a leg just to jump high! There are some workouts out there that are worth the money, but very few of them actually are.

    Football Offensive Formations

    Offensive formations

Before the ball is snapped the offensive team lines up in a formation. Most teams have a “base” formation they prefer to line up in, while other teams leave the defense guessing. Teams will often have “special formations” which they only use in obvious passing situations, short yardage or goaline situations, or formations they have developed for that particular game just to confuse the defense. Because there are a nearly unlimited number of possible formations, only a few of the more common ones are listed below.

    Pro Set

The Pro Set is a traditional formation commonly, a “base” set used by professional and amateur teams. The formation has two wide receivers, one tight end, and two running backs with the backs split behind the quarterback, who is lined up behind center. The running backs are lined up side-by-side instead of one in front of the other as in traditional I-Formation sets.

    Shotgun formation

The Shotgun formation is an alignment used by the offensive team in American and Canadian football. This formation is used by many teams in obvious passing situations, although other teams do use this as their base formation. In the shotgun, instead of the quarterback receiving the snap from center at the line of scrimmage, he stands at least 5 yards back. Sometimes the quarterback will have a back on one or both sides before the snap, while other times he will be the lone player in the backfield with everyone spread out as receivers. One of the advantages of the shotgun formation are that the passer has more time to set up in the pocket which gives him a second or two to locate open receivers. Another advantage is that standing further back from the line before the snap gives the quarterback a better “look” at the defensive alignment. The disadvantages are that the defense knows a pass is more than likely coming up (although some running plays can be run effectively from the shotgun) and there is a higher risk of a botched snap than in a simple center/quarterback exchange.

The formation got its name after it was used by a professional football club, the San Francisco 49ers, in 1960. Combining elements of the short punt and spread formations (”spread” in that it had receivers spread widely instead of close to or behind the interior line players), it was said to be like a “shotgun” in spraying receivers around the field like a scatter-shot gun. Formations similar or identical to the shotgun used decades previously would be called names such as “spread double wing”. Short punt formations (so called because the distance between the snapper and the ostensible punter is shorter than in long punt formation) don’t usually have as much emphasis on wide receivers.

At times the formation has been more common in Canadian football, which allows only three downs to move ten yards downfield instead of the American game’s four. Canadian teams are therefore more likely to find themselves with long yardage to make on the penultimate down, and therefore more likely to line up in the shotgun to increase their opportunities for a large gain. Teams such as the Saskatchewan Roughriders utilize the shotgun for a vast majority of their plays.

    Wishbone formation

The wishbone formation, also known simply as ‘bone, is a play formation in American football.

The wishbone is primarily a running formation with one wide receiver, one tight end and three running backs behind the quarterback (who takes the snap under center). The back lined up behind the quarterback is the fullback and the other two are halfbacks (although they may be called tailbacks or I backs in some playbook terminology).

The wishbone is often associated with the option as this formation allows the quarterback to easily run the option to either side of the line. It is also ideal for running the triple option.

    History

The wishbone was developed by Offensive Coordinator Emory Bellard and Head Coach Darrell Royal at the University of Texas in 1968. Coach Royal was always a fan of the option offense, and in looking at the personnel on the team, Coach Bellard saw three great running backs. After experimenting with family members over the summer, Coach Bellard came up with the formation.

Coach Bellard demonstrated the formation to Darrell Royal, who quickly embraced the idea. It proved to be a wise choice: Texas tied its first game running the new offense, lost the second, and then won the next thirty straight games, leading to two National Championships using the formation.

It was given the name wishbone by the Houston Chronicle sportswriter Mickey Herskowitz.

A variation to this formation is called the flexbone.

    I formation

The I formation is one of the most common offensive formations in American football. The I formation draws its name from the vertical (as viewed from the opposing endzone) alignment of quarterback, fullback, and running back, particularly when contrasted with the same players’ alignments in the now-archaic T formation.

The formation begins with the usual 5 offensive linemen (2 offensive tackles, 2 guards, and a center), the quarterback under center, and two backs in-line behind the quarterback. The base variant adds a tight end to one side of the line and two wide receivers, one at each end of the line.

    Typical roles

The I formation is typically employed in running situations. The fullback typically fills a blocking, rather than rushing or receiving, role in the modern game. With the fullback in the backfield as a blocker, runs can be made to either side of the line with his additional blocking support. This is contrasted with the use of tight ends as blockers who, being set up at the end of the line, are able to support runs to one side of the line only. The fullback can also be used as a feint—since the defense can spot him more easily than the running back, they may be drawn in his direction while the running back takes the ball the opposite way.

Despite the emphasis on the running game, the I formation remains an effective base for a passing attack. The formation supports up to three wide receivers and many running backs serve as an additional receiving threat. While the fullback is rarely a pass receiver, he serves as a capable additional pass blocker protecting the quarterback before the pass. The running threat posed by the formation also lends itself to the play-action pass. The flexible nature of the formation also helps prevent defenses from focusing their attention on either the run or pass.

    Common variations

Many subtypes of the I formation exist, generally emphasizing the running or passing strengths of the base version.

    * The Big I places a tight end on each side of the offensive line (removing a wide receiver). Coupled with the fullback’s blocking, this allows two additional blockers for a run in either direction. This is a running-emphasis variant.

    * The Power I replaces one wide receiver with a third back (fullback or running back) in the backfield, set up to one side of the fullback. This is a running-emphasis variant.

    * The Jumbo or Goal-line formation further extends the Power I or Big I, adding a second or third tight end to the line, respectively. This variant has no wide receivers and is all but exclusively a running formation intended to reliably gain minimal yardage, most commonly two yards or less.

    * The Three-wide I replaces the tight end with a third wide receiver. This is a passing-emphasis variant.

The I formation, in any variant, can also be modified as Strong or Weak. In either case, the fullback lines up roughly a yard laterally to his usual position. Strong refers to a move towards the side of the quarterback with more players, weak in the opposite direction. These modifications have little effect on expected play call.

    In Professional Football

In the NFL, the I formation is less frequently used than in college, as the use of the fullback as a blocker has given way to formations with additional tight ends and wide receivers, who may be called on to block during running plays. The increasingly common ace formation replaces the fullback with an additional receiver, who lines up along the line of scrimmage. The I will typically be used in short-yardage and goal line situations.

    Goal Line formation

    Single set Back

Single set back is a base formation in American Football used by the offensive team which requires only one running back behind the quarterback. There are many variations on single back formations including two tight ends and two wide receivers, one tight end/three wide receivers, etc. The running back can line up directly behind the quarterback or offset either the weak side (away from the tight end) or the strong side(towards the tight end).

    Football Cleats Buying Guide

Football is a high impact sport requiring fleet footwork for approximately seven to ten times of your body weight are transferred to your feet. It is also a very demanding sport that combines speed, agility and precision. Not surprising why football cleats have been designed to be more aggressive than other types of cleated shoes.

They have also been made to match the player’s position and field type as well. Like soccer cleats, the upper of football cleats are made from either leather or synthetic material. Leather is considered to be very durable with superior breathability and flexibility thus making it more expensive than synthetics. Synthetics, however, does not become stiff and out of shape when they become wet and improperly dried although it won’t give you the breathability and durability provided by leather. Cost-wise though, it has gained much of an advantage for it is less expensive than leather.

Football cleats also comes in three different heights or styles to suit each player’s position and needs, namely: high-top, mid-cut and low-cut. High-top football cleats are often used by linemen for it’s ankle extension provides extra ankle support especially for lateral movements. There are a lot of Adidas football cleats out in the market today that could get the job done.

Mid-cut football cleats are preferred by most skilled players specifically defensive backs, running backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks for they combine maneuverability with support. Mid-cut Nike football cleats are some of the top picks belonging to this style. Low-cut football cleats, on the other hand, are the best choice for some players for they are lightweight with the most maneuverability thus allowing them to make quick cuts on the field. So, if you favor the lightest shoe providing extra maneuverability, a pair of Reebok football cleats could be your best bet.

There are also two types of cleat types depending on the type of field that you will play on, namely: molded and detachable. Molded cleats are attached permanently to the outsole on the bottom of the shoes and are often used by players who use turf fields for they provide spring and traction and a better grip on harder turf surfaces. They are also generally cheaper than shoes with detachable cleats.

Detachable cleats, on the other hand, with it’s versatility can be used to fit various field conditions on all types of grass, be it hard and dry or wet and sloppy. It uses studs that can be removed and replaced with a wrench so you can customize your shoes easily. Shorter studs can be used for hard and dry surfaces and longer studs on wet and sloppy fields. For a perfect fitting pair of football cleats, see Tips on How to Find your Shoe Size.
